Integration of Passion in Youth: A Qualitative Enquiry among Indian Classical Dancers

Abstract
Engagement in activities derived from individual’s passion are considered to be more integrative in nature at various levels. The outcome could be deeper and more holistic. That is the reason passion of individual is acknowledged, nurtured and promoted for a fulfilling life. The previous findings talk about outcome of activities based on passion, however, very rare efforts have been invested to explore the process of integration of passion. For this purpose, the current study takes up a grounded theory approach to explore how passion perceived by a child which in turn gets integrated in to career choices or during adulthood. The current sample consists of Indian classical dancers who have chosen dance as a result of their passion, and currently are pursuing it as a part of their career choice too. Unstructured interviews were conducted and coding at various levels was done to extract the underlying process. The findings of the results indicate that integration of passion is an outcome of combination of external and internal factors and are complexly intertwined. The key elements emerged in current theoretical model explains the engaging styles and process of sustaining passion in a specific context. The result helps to understand the process of integration, which further contribute in literature to understand passion in deeper manner.
