VISWAKARMA ARTISANS AND THEIR TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP IN KERALA

Abstract
Purpose: Human imagination and creativity have been the foundation of our civilization. Creative people have triggered the onward movement of history. Everywhere in the world the builders and makers go to form the community of creative manufactures. The crafts people who express magnificence of their artistry for comfortable living for the society as a whole and people at large. The craftsmen inculcate the culture of creativity by disseminating their accumulated knowledge for the benefit of the community, sharing values of their art among themselves and entailing a cultural living for the fellow beings. Viswakarmas are the traditional crafts community of India.Methodology: The five subgroups of Viswakarma community: carpenters (Maya), blacksmiths (Manu), bronze smiths (Tvashtra), goldsmiths (Daivagya) and stonemasons (Shilpi) are said to be the descendants of Lord Viswakarmaand these skills are heavily used in all forms and works of lifefrom agriculture, industriesto services. Findings/ Result: Being an essential cog in the wheel of this world, it is imperative that the skills of this community be expanded through education and other forms of skill development so that their participation increases substantially in every field and everyone benefits from it.Paper type: Qualitative Research Paper
