Abstract
The paper explores the novel The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy and unravels the complexity of
the queer representation and social division issues through the Character of Anjum in the novel. This paper will
analyses the depiction ofproblem of social division faced by transgender using the Queer Theory. This paper deals
with the queer genders which are considered to be deviating from existing norms or confines of gender as set by the
society. They are stigmatized in the society by diverse means which leads to their ostracisation in the society and the
space for treating the transgender as other take place. Though queer identity is being highlighted in contemporary
literature, their representation is still a site of conflict. The theoretical premise of queer theory is employed to justify
the reasons that underlie the representation of the third gender i.e. transgender in the novel. The paper argues how
the writer challenges and subverts gender identities as social constructs and celebrates the possibility of queer
identities which does not conform to the strict and rigid confines of gender and sexual binaries of society.
