The Rise of English in Algeria: A Challenge for French in Education
MEKAOUSSI Naima
Pages: 1171-1181
Abstract
This study examines linguistic dynamics in Algeria, focusing on the rise of English in relation to French. Through analysing 15 comments on a YouTube video, three main positions are identified: supporters of English, defenders of French and proponents of the complementary nature of both languages. Comments favouring English emphasise its role in providing professional opportunities and in liberating the country from its colonial past. Conversely, those who advocate for French emphasise its cultural and historical importance, asserting its status as a heritage language. Those advocating for complementarity suggest that proficiency in both languages enriches the skills of young Algerians and enables them to better navigate a globalised world. The study sheds light on the identity issues and sociolinguistic implications of these debates, emphasising the need for policymakers to develop inclusive language policies that recognise the country’s linguistic diversity. Algeria can prepare its future generations to face the challenges of a multilingual society by integrating both French and English into the educational system.
