Abstract
This study aims to trace the meanings and implications of the rhetorical art of ambiguity in the Holy Quran, a stylistic feature that rhetoricians have largely overlooked, with their discussions on it being limited to brief references. It is notable that the Quran chose this art as an expressive tool in some of its verses, as did the noble prophetic tradition, eloquent poetry, and prose. Among the conclusions reached by the study are that ambiguity is acceptable when there is no risk of confusion, but interjected when it hinders understanding and comprehension. Furthermore, it serves various rhetorical purposes such as exaggeration and belittling, praise and blame, faith and disbelief, affirmation and denial, or other opposing meanings. In the Quran, ambiguity is a manifestation of eloquence and clarity, appearing in diverse forms, and while instances of this rhetorical device are rare in Quranic expression, they come in different shades, patterns, and stylistic and rhetorical purposes.
