Abstract
The purpose of this investigation is to examine how well Indian ESL students are aware of various grammatical
patterns in academic English. It seeks to theoretically investigate specific English syntactic structures and
empirically study Indian ESL learners' performance in dealing with syntactic structures via a specialised test
created for this purpose. There are four sections to this research. Scholarly and linguistic perspectives on general
definitions of syntax and word order are provided in the first chapter. In the second section, we look at the most
common syntactic patterns in current usage of Standard English. The third chapter discusses the main types of
errors made on the test given to non-departmental postgraduate students in the College of Education, and
provides results measuring their overall performance at the recognition and production levels. The major
takeaways from this research are summed up in Chapter 4
