Abstract
Olive tree (Olea europaea) as a plant grows in most parts of the world is beneficial to health for its nutritional properties. Olive oil improves the health of the eye and prevents retinal deterioration. The Holy Qur'an, the central religious text of Islam, refers to olive tree as the happy or blessed tree. The name of olive was mentioned seven times in Qur'an including in the verse 35 of surah An-Nūr. In this study, we reviewed the current evidence on the effects of olive oil on the eye-sight and the mechanisms exerting these effects. The verse 35 of surah An-Nūr was also evaluated to find out implicit evidence related to eye structure and function. This article could be the beginning of further research on this surah to find out more facts about the eye and eye diseases.
