Abstract
The poetry we are discussing here is primarily based on formal experimentation and deviates from most common writing styles. It has taken on various names, and critics and scholars have not agreed on a corresponding term for this concept. Some have called it postmodern poetry, others prose poetry, while others have called it new writing instead of poetry because it completely rebels against the writing system to which critics were accustomed during the modernist era. We have preferred to use the latter term. We will pose questions such as: Can we arrive at a definition of the identity of this poetry? Is there a specific identity that expresses a particular understanding and vision of the individual? Does poetry contribute to the construction of Arab identity, or does it deny its specificity and prove the opposite?
