Abstract
Background: Mental Illness and Treatment of Mental Illness both are the reciprocal but conflicted aspects in the field of Psychiatry. The Person who is suffering from mental illness mostly unaware with his state of mind and if he knows, he doesn’t want to accept the reality of his mental status. In this situation it becomes difficult to cure him from his mental illness. Doctors prescribe the appropriate Medicine but often patients don’t compliance their directions.
Objectives: Poor adherence of medication, irregular visits for medical check-up, stop taking medicines and self-medication are the main hurdles to the strengthen Mental Health. The mentally ill person is the core responsibility of their concern persons and in a long duration such person becomes only liability for them. Thus, medication of these people is depended on the convenience of their care givers as well as their mercy towards mentally ill person.
Methods: Researcher conducted a cross-sectional study with data collection from more than 50 mentally ill persons; suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD), Obsessive Compulsion Disorder (OCD), and Depression through Google form of questionnaire. The Medication Adherence Rating Scale (MARS), Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) were used to explore medication compliance and its influencing factors in the social environment.
Results: In this cross-sectional study, the findings showed that more than 60% patients forget to take medicines, 70% of them feel sluggish and tired on medication, 66% patients stop taking medicines when they feel improvement and 70% stop it due to feeling worse, but 80% patients believe that adherence of medication can prevent them from mental illness.
Conclusion: The findings show that the self-efficacy, quality of life, and social function of patients with mental illness are important self-factors influencing medication adherence in social environment. This study found that there was no correlation between medication compliance and demographic characteristics or mental symptoms.
