Abstract
The study examines lexical pragmatics account for figurative meanings interpretation where by the linguistically encoded meaning differs from that which is intended by the words used especially in the case of metaphor and hyperbole. Arriving at the speaker’s meaning of figurative meanings involves a lexical pragmatic process of broadening. Such a process is context dependent in which the hearer relies on the contextual items and pragmatic expectations activated by the context in which words occure
