Abstract
INTRODUCTION:
Dental implant is also known as a fixture or an endosseous implant. It is a surgical
component interfacing with jaw bone or skull supporting dental prosthesis like crown, bridges,
denture and facial prosthesis and also as an orthodontic anchor. A process called
osseointegration is a biological process, in which titanium-like materials form an intimate bond
with the bone. Fixture is placed first so that it is osseointegrated before a dental prosthetic is
attached to implant or abutment is kept so that it will hold a dental prosthetic.
AIM: To determine the awareness and knowledge of dental implants among dental students MATERIALS AND METHODS:
Well structured questionnaire containing 10 self-structured questions was framed and
circulated among 100 dental students through an online survey link. The results were collected
and tabulated and were statistically analysed using SPSS software.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:
In this study majority of the dental students are aware of dental implants and the
knowledge and awareness was seen more among 2nd year dental students.
CONCLUSION:
Knowledge, awareness and perception about dental implants among dental students
differed at different academic years. Knowledge about dental implants was seen more among
male population. Implant dentistry in undergraduate curriculum should be added so that
students will be able to respond properly to the increasing number of patients with queries
about dental implants.
