Abstract
Violentconflicts and human rights violation have and continues to force people to flee from their home and homeland. This article examines the journey of displacement experienced by the African diaspora, as depicted in the novels of Maryse Conde, andfocuses on the factors that lead millions of Africans to be displaced into foreign lands. Through critically analyzing Conde’s narratives and the journey of her characters, the many societal factors that led to displacement and the multifaceted experiences of displacement by force are explored.The complexities and challenges an individual is subjected to when getting displaced are analyzed in the context of Conde’s narratives to understand the realities faced by members within the diaspora. Through analyzing the journeys of Conde’s characters, this article unravels societal forces like colonialism and cultural clashes and their role in displacing people, particularly through force. Structural racism and its role in driving people away from their homelands are also explored, thus highlighting the realities of forced migration and the factors causing it.
