The adolescent years get a bad rap for being full of turmoil and pressure. A "period of significant danger to healthy development" (Takanishi, 1993, p. 86) has been coined to describe this time frame. Weissberg, Caplan, and Harwood (1991) estimate that 25–50% of teenagers participate in risk behaviors with unfavorable health and behavior effects, such as substance misuse, unintended pregnancies, and STDs. Young teenagers sometimes struggle throughout the transition from junior high to high school (Dubow et al, 1990). There is an uptick in the reporting of issues including depression, suicidal ideation, and drug abuse at this time of change (Dubow et al., 1990). One-quarter, or 7 million children, require urgent intense intervention for high-risk behavior, according to research by Dryfoos (1991). This article addresses the problem of irresponsible adolescent conduct and its repercussions for society, as well as potential solutions to the problem.
