Abstract
The occurrence of dental caries has a very early onset. Caries follow a typical pattern on each tooth surface. The
different surfaces of a primary tooth are unequally susceptible to dental caries. Each primary posterior tooth has
specific pinpoint areas where the susceptibility of caries is more than other areas. The most frequent sites of attack
are the occlusal surfaces of the first and second molars.
To collect data and analyse the tooth number and surface affected in class II dental caries in second mandibular
molar relating to the patients age and gender.
The retrospective study was conducted in a private dental college, Chennai, India. Data was collected from the
records of the children between 3 to 6 years of age who were diagnosed with class II dental caries in the left second
mandibular molar between September 2020 and February 2021. A total of 212 children were included in the study.
Data was collected with parameters like age, gender and tooth number affected by the patient. The collected data
was analysed using SPSS statistical software. Data analysis was done using chi square test and p value was set as
0.05 as level of significance.
Among the 212 pediatric patients, in the areas affected, 41.51% are affected in the DO region, 46.23% are affected
in the MO region and 12.26% are affected in the MOD region. In the 212 patients, 70.75% have class II caries in the left second mandibular molar and the remaining 29.25% have class II caries in the right second mandibular molar.
On correlation, it can be observed that more number of left second mandibular molars are affected in 6 year olds
(20.28%). 40.09% of males have their left second mandibular molars affected. It can also be concluded that 33.02%
of the left second mandibular molars are affected in their MO region.
It can be concluded that females of age 6 are the most susceptible to class II dental caries in the left second
mandibular molar.
