Manufacturing sector in India presently contributes 16-17 per cent to gross domestic product andprovide employment to around 12per cent of the workforce of the country. Numerous studies have projected that every job created in manufacturing has a multiplier effect in creating 2–3 jobs in the services sector. In India, where employment generation is one of the key policy issues, this makes this sector a critical one to attaincomprehensive growth. This paper made an attempt to discuss micro small and medium enterprises, share of micro small and medium enterprises and social classification of manufacturing sectors in India.
