Abstract
The aim of this comparative split mouth study was to evaluate the postoperative outcome of piezo
versus conventional method alveoloplasty. Total 5 edentulous patients with bilateral maxillary and mandibular
bony spicules or bony irregularities requiring alveoloplasty were treated with conventional method using Bone
Rounger and Bone File for reshaping of bone on one side and piezoelectric device on the other side. The
patients were followed up for 7 days to evaluate healing of the surgical site. The primary outcome variables
assessed were postoperative pain using visual analogue scale (VAS), and postoperative healing using Landry,
Turnbull, and Howley healing index. The variance between the outcome variables were statistically analysed
using paired t-test. There was a statistically highly significant difference between both groups with respect to
outcome variables such as VAS at 1st postoperative day, 7th postoperative day, and healing index at 7th
postoperative day. It was observed that mean VAS was higher and mean healing index was lower for the
conventional group as compared to piezo electric group at the end of 7th day. This study favours the use of
piezosurgery in atraumatic alveoloplasty in all patients.
