Abstract
Literature is fundamentally defined as a medium that reflects life in all its aspects, and more recently, through a new term, Ecocriticism, has been engaged in depicting the relationship between the human and its physical environment. In Ecocriticism nature is the centre, not the man. But the modern man, influenced by the capitalist market forces, destroys nature with technology and modern living style. Amitav Ghosh in his novel The Hungry Tide writes about nature, people and environmental problems along with the climate change in the tidal area of the Sundarbans. Ghosh combines together two narratives: one unfolding through Nirmal’s journal narrating the Morichjhapi episode and the second through Piya’s journey, revealing the contemporary situation of the humans, the flora and fauna of Sundarbans. This paper elucidates how nature is being affected by human activities due to lack of awareness about the conservation of nature.
