EVALUATION OF THE ANTIMICROBIAL EFFICACY OF OZONE DURING IMPLANT THERAPY: A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED CLINICAL TRIAL

Abstract
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of ozonated olive oil during implant therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted in a randomized controlled split mouth trial design. 20 (6 Female and 14 male; mean age 29±8.17) patients with clinically healthy periodontium undergoing Stage One Dental Implant therapy were recruited among patients referred to the Department Of Periodontics and Oral Implantology, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai. Baseline microbial colonies count on silk sutures after surgery and after one week post operatively were calculated. Landry’s Simplified Healing Index used to assess the postoperative healing achieved by the respective topical application of chlorhexidine (Rexidin- M: chlorhexidine gluconate, metronidazole and lignocaine hydrochloride gel) and ozonated olive oil applied through a blunt syringe application onto surgical site. (P <0.05) was considered as statistically significant. RESULTS: In subjects undergoing surgery, it was seen that the results were statistically significant when baseline was compared to rexidin gel and ozone oil intervention. (p<0.05) CONCLUSION: Rexidin gel was overall the best antimicrobial agent for postoperative wound healing due to its antibacterial properties.
