EMERGING NEW RURAL ELITE IN SENAPATI DISTRICT OF MANIPUR: SOME SOCIOLOGICAL OBSERVATION

Abstract
The paper attempted to explore the emergence of new rural social elite. No doubt there is an
existence of elites in all society whether traditional or modern. Since time immemorial rural society in the
Senapati district in Manipur exists as a little republic with no interference from the outsider. The societies
maintain its own pace of peace and solidarity. The system is control by higher ranking individuals in the
society and they are few in numbers. This study found out that, these groups of people are the social elite of
the rural society. Sometime through the selfish mode or self-centered ideology it curtails the right and
freedom of an individual. This paper also seeks to understand position of women in village or society. It also
explores elitism in the context of democracy, considering both advantages and disadvantage and how rural
social elite function. Finally, some sociological observation is made on how the value system has changed
due to education and modernization is presented with a concluding remark.
