Abstract
Women has always been a foundation stone of a family rather society as it’s women who nurtures life, shapes it
and a bridge through which we preserve our culture and transmit it to future generations. However, the real and
biggest misfortune in our country is that indefinite injustice and violence is being done to her. In addition to all
other forms of violence, women face violence within her household and such type of violence is mainly and
commonly known as Domestic violence. Domestic violence against women has always been the common type
of violence in India as women used to remain silent against the barbaric acts done to her within family. Till
2005, we, in India, didn’t have any particular law to combat such type of violence. This paper deals with “The
Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005” and how far the Act has been successful to combat
violence or has the Act been a shield against violence or a sword itself to inflict violence.
