Abstract
The exposure of students to the internet and the digital world has increased many folds in the last two years because of the pandemic situations. A complete shift to online education and giving gadgets to every little hand
was an emergency response to the world-wide lockdown situation.By choice or due to having no choice, the
internet and virtual world have become an inseparable part of our lives now.The world is developing rapidly as a
hub of technology, and it has affected out lives in exciting ways,
but it has given rise to new problems also. We read news of misuse of social networking websites, cyber
bullying, and online scams. There are cases of credit card scams, illegal downloads and copying, addiction of
games to harmful level, viruses, pornography, and hate sites.With the increased exposure of children to the
internet and the digital world, the cybercrimes against children are also increasing at an alarming rate.
According to the latest National Crime Record Bureau data, there has been an increase of 400 percent in
cybercrime against children in 2020 in comparison to 2019 in India. Now, it’s time for us to think about what
should be the do’s and don’ts of this newly evolving world or in other words we can say that how to become
digital citizens.Someone who has a place of its own in the digital world is called as a Digital Citizen. A digital
citizenship comes with digital rights and responsibilities, which are for the purpose of protection of digital
citizens.In this world full of technology, it is crucial to teach students about Digital Citizenship. In a world
where students have devices like mobiles and tablets in their hands from infancy, it becomesvery important to
train students for digital citizenship accordingly. This paper talks about the digital role and responsibilities of
every digital citizen. This paper emphasises on the importance of the teacher’s role to prepare digital citizens of
tomorrow. It also talks about the content and methodology to teach digital citizenship.
