Abstract
Agreatchallengeinthebiomedicalengineeringisthenon-invasiveassessmentofthephysiologicalchangesoccurringinsidethehumanbody.Specifically,detectingthe abnormalitiesinthehumaneyeisextremelydifficultduetothevariouscomplexitiesassociatedwiththeprocess.Retinalimagescapturedbydigitalcamerascanbeusedtoidentifythenatureoftheabnormalitiesaffectingthehumaneye.Conventionaldiseaseidentificationtechniquesfromretinalimagesaremostlydependentonmanualintervention.Humanobservationishighlypronetoerror,thesuccessrateofthesetechniquesisquitelow.DiabeticRetinopathyisonesuchdiseaseofretinawhichoccursinpeoplesufferingfromlongstandingdiabetes.ItisamultistageprogressingdiseasenamelyNDPR andPDR. Microaneurysms,hemorrhages andexudatesaretheabnormalfeaturescommonlyobservedintheretinalimageofapersonaffectedbydiabeticretinopathy.Imageprocessingtechniquesareusedtopre-processthefundusimage,whichisfollowedbysegmentationofanomalies.Featureextractionisdoneandthedetectedfeaturesareusedtoclassifythedifferentstagesofdiabeticretinopathy.TheclassificationtechniqueusedisFast Regional convolutional Neural Network,andtheaccuracyobtainedis98.9%.
