Correlation between spasticity and muscle thickness of quadriceps in children with hemiplegia

Abstract
Background: Spasticity is a component of upper motor neuron lesion that causes difficulty with motor functions essential during the day activities. Muscle Thickness (MT) is determined by the perpendicular distance between the deep and superficial aponeurosis. The purpose of our study was to investigate how spasticity affects the muscle thickness of the quadriceps femoris (MTQ) in spastic hemiplegic children. Methods: This study included 42 children with spastic hemiplegia of both sexes, ranging from 4 to 8 years. Ultrasonography (US) was used to determine the MTQ, and Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) was used to determine the degree of spasticity. Results: A non-significant difference was found in MTQ between affected and less affected sides (p> 0.05), and also, there was a non-significant correlation between spasticity and MTQ (p= 0.32101). Conclusion: Mild spasticity has no significant effect on MTQ in children with spastic hemiplegia.
