Childhood Education: A Comparative Study of English Language Acquisition through Grammar Translation Method and Direct Method

Abstract
As India is a country of many languages, there are different languages through whichpeople get
theireducation. Forexample,in TamilNadu, therearetwo mediums ofeducation. They are Tamil medium and
English medium. The problem with this educationsystem is, students who are learning through Tamil medium,
do not understand Englishsentences. Though these students have English subject in their syllabus, they learn
itthrough Tamil. As anoutcomeofTamilbasededucation,studentsstudyinginthissystemfacealotofhurdles to survive
in the modern world. English based education does not cost high andTamil based education does not cost low.
But the outcome of English based education isdefinitelyhigh. There are numerous methodologies to teach
English. English teachers in Tamil medium classes use the traditional Grammar Translation Method to teach
English. Whereas teachers in English medium classes use the Direct method to teach English. This research
analyses the students who are taught using Direct Method and the students who are taught using the traditional
Grammar Translation Method.
