Abstract
Introduction:Thyroid gland is the largest endocrine gland in the human body, whose hormones
have a great effect on metabolism. Therefore, hypothyroidism could have widespread effects on the
human body, which could affect the quality of life of the patient. Hence, the purpose of the study
was to compare the effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy and positive psychotherapy on quality of
life in patients with hypothyroidism.
Materials and Methods: The study was quasi-experimental applied carried out by pre-test-posttest-follow-up method with a control group in 2020. The population was the patients with
hypothyroidism admitted to endocrinologist in 2020. Among them, 45 patients were selected using a
convenient sampling and then randomly divided into three groups of cognitive-behavioral therapy,
positive psychotherapy, and control. The experimental group received cognitive-behavioral therapy
in eight sessions and positive psychotherapy in eight weekly sessions too. Moreover, the participants
answered the World Health Organization (WHO) Quality of life Questionnaire (1989) in pre-test,
post-test and follow-up stages. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance
using SPSS-22.
Results: The analysis results indicated that cognitive-behavioral therapy and positive psychotherapy
had a significant effect on quality of life in the post-test as well as follow-up groups. Thus,
endocrinologists are recommended to use cognitive-behavioral therapy and positive psychotherapyas a complementary method to enhance the quality of life of these people along with medical
