Abstract
Background: Interlukin-27(IL-27) can exert both pro-inflamatory and anti-inflamatory effects,IL-27
increase in T1D, Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) has been known as a criterion of generalized
atherosclerosis and a marker of CVD progression in many studies.CIMT and T1D, still remains to be
established.
Aim: to assess the relation between IL-27 level and left ventricular dimension and CIMT among Type 1
Diabetic Patients.
Subjects and Methods: at Department of Pediatrics, Diabetes Outpatient and Echocardiography
Cardiology Unit of Pediatrics Department, Zagazig university hospitals, we conducted this case-control
study was carried on 30 children diagnosed with T1D and 30 healthy age- and sex-matched children that
were selected as non-diabetic group (controls).Serum IL-27,lipidmeasurements in addition to
echocardiography andCarotid intima-media thickness were assessed.
Results:IL-27 significantly increase in T1D There is significant higher value of carotid intima-media
thickness of good and bad control type 1 diabetic children compared to healthy children. There is
significant positive relation between carotid intima media thickness, weight, height and WBCs of good
control type1 diabetic children. There is significant positive relation between carotid intima media
thickness and WBCs, LDL and LVM of healthy control children. There is no significant relation between
serum interleukin 27 and presence of cardiovascular complication or carotid intima-media thickness of
type1 diabetic children.
Conclusion: IL-27 increase in T1D, CIMT is a safe and convenient measurement, which may be helpful
in predicting an increased risk of future cardiovascular disease in children with type 1 diabetes. There is
no significant relation between serum interleukin 27 and presence of cardiovascular complication of type I
diabetic children. Serum Interleukin 27 was poor marker to detect cardiac complication and Carotid
intima-media thickness of type1 diabetic children.
