Assessment of parents awareness towards preventive dental care of children

Abstract
INTRODUCTION
Parents have significant influence on a child's personality, including a positive reinforcement towards oral hygiene
through proper health education.Knowledge and awareness of their child’s oral health among parents is a
fundamental component that helps generate a preventive measure thus, establishing a good oral health status of their
children.
AIM
The main aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of parents about child oral health and
prevention.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The sample population of this study includes parents of children aged 1-18 years. A generalized questionnaire based
on preventive dental care of children was prepared and uploaded in an online platform (survey planet) which was
circulated among the sample population using various social media platforms. Data collected was assessed and
tabulated using Microsoft excel. The collected data was then subjected to statistical analysis using Statistical
Package for Social Science (SPSS).
RESULTS
This survey was conducted amongst parents of children aged 1-18 years. About 42.3% of the total population were
aware of bottle tooth decay, 48.1% did not know and around 9.6% were unsure about bottle tooth decay. About 73%
of the total population had average knowledge about preventive oral health, 21.1% had more and around 5.7% had
the least.
CONCLUSION
Based on the results of this study the following conclusions are arrived : Majority of parents reinforce wrong
behavioral habits towards their kids; Parent’s knowledge about their kid’s oral health and its importance and
methods to promote are poor; and there is awareness among the parents, but with insufficient knowledge.
