Assessing Product and Process Approach Teaching of Writing Skills in Grade Nine English Textbook

Abstract
The main purpose of the present study was to evaluate the teaching of writing in grade nine English textbook. To achieve the objectives of the study, qualitative research method was used to evaluate how the writing lessons are
designed and taught in the current grade 9 textbook. Textbook analysis, classroom observation and semi-structured interview were used as data gathering instruments. Semi structured interview which was prepared for teachers. The
collected data was analyzed and interpreted by using qualitative method of data analysis and the data was organized and interpreted thematically. The findings of the study revealed that 21 writing lessons were designed based on process approach, this may enable learners to practice writing for real life communication. On the other hand, 17 of them were designed based on product approach and it encourages learners to practice the grammatical aspects of the language. However, students were not actively involved in process approach regarding the textbook design. Besides, 38 writing lessons were based on guided, modeled, controlled and free writing techniques of teaching writing. Furthermore, classroom observation and semi-structured interview result revealed that the practice of teaching writing in the classrooms was not in line with the current textbook design
