Accessibility of Basic Household Amenities in Thiruvananthapuram District: A Rural-Urban Comparison

Abstract
This study is a comparative analysis of rural-urban household amenities based on Census -2011 data. The study focuses on source of drinking water, source of lighting, type of latrine facility,type of drainage connectivity, availability of kitchen facility, type of fuel used for cooking.The percentage analysis is used to compare rural and urban households. The study found that, In the rural area the major source of drinking water is un-covered well and in the urban area it is tap water from treated sources. The main source of lighting as electricity is more in urban area compared to rural area. Rural area has a greater number of households with no latrine facility within premises compared to urban area. The closed drainage is more in urban area than rural area.In the rural area majority of households using firewood as the fuel and in the urban area it is LPG/PNG.
