Abstract
This study was conducted to compare the effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
and the improvement of optimism on T4 and TSH levels in patients with hypothyroidism. This was a
quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and follow-up with a control group. The
statistical population included all patients with hypothyroidism who were referred to a private
endocrine clinic in Dubai in 2020, from whom 60 patients were selected by convenience sampling
and randomly assigned to the CBT, positive psychotherapy, and control groups. Thyroid tests were
performed on participants to measure T4 and TSH levels. Participants in the two experimental
groups received 8 sessions of CBT and 8 sessions of positive psychotherapy. The data were analyzed
by repeated-measures ANOVA. According to the results, there was no difference between the effect
of CBT and positive psychotherapy on T4 and TSH levels in patients with hypothyroidism (P
<0.05). CBT and improved optimism reduced T4 and TSH levels in patients with hypothyroidism.
So, the use of this method was recommended to regulate T4 and TSH levels in patients with
hypothyroidism.
