Title: Young children with and without disabilities: Perceptions of peers with physical disabilities

Author(s): Mary Trepanier-Street, Seong Hong, Kathleen Silverman, Laura Reynolds Keefer and Tammy L. Morris

Pages: 117-128

Abstract: Young children with and without disabilities were interviewed regarding their perceptions of other children with and without disabilities.  Both groups of children were generally positive and realistic about the physical, academic and social competence of children with and without disabilities.  However, compared to typically developing children, children with disabilities tended to view other children with disabilities more positively in the physical and academic areas.  In the social areas, more children without disabilities responded more positively than children with disabilities. These findings have implications for successful inclusion in early childhood education.

Keywords: Young children with disabilities, perceptions about physical disabilities, typically developing children’s perceptions.

Title: Bir vaka Ssnumu: Otizm için risk taşıyan bir çocukta Uygulamalı Davranış Analizine dayalı eğitim

The case report: ABA-based education for  a toddler at high risk for Autism

Author(s): Yeşim Güleç-Aslann

Pages: 129-147

Bulgular; (a) çocuğun bireyselleştirilmiş eğitim programında yer alan becerilerde ilerlediğini, (b) otizm belirtilerinin yoğunluğunun azaldığını, (c) gelişimsel alanlarda performansının arttığını göstermiştir.

Anahtar sözcükler: Otizm spektrum bozukluğu, uygulamalı davranış analizi, erken yoğun davranışsal uygulama

Abstract: Early education using the methods of applied behavioral analysis (ABA) has shown to produce important gains in many children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or at risk for ASD. This case report focuses on descriptive information about the first year of education given to a child who runs high risk of autism spectrum disorder is provided. The findings based on the data gathered throughout the process demonstrate that the child has achieved progress and improved performance in the skills targeted to be gained throughout the education. In addition, there are findings showing that the intensity of autism symptoms and the behavioral problems have lessened.

PROGRAM REVIEW

Title: Önleyici müdahale biliminde Alternatif Düşünme Stratejilerini Destekleme Programı

Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies Program in preventive intervention science

Author(s): Şakire Ocak and Tuğçe Burcu Arda

Pages: 175-191

Abstract: When the studies conducted in the preventive intervention field are evaluated, it is seen that intense discussions continue about the efficiencies, effectiveness, implementation process, adaptation and how these programs are implemented regarding different cultures. The goal of this study is to report developments of theoretical and practical in preventive intervention science and to introduce Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies- PATHS program that is scientifically proven many times in terms of effectiveness and has become widespread gradually in many countries. PATHS is a universal school-based preventive intervention program which can be used to improve emotional social competence and reduce aggression and behavior problems for all children (both regular and special education) beginning in the preschool years through the end of elementary school. This study will build an intellectual base for practices of daily life and gaining prevalence for studies related to preventive intervention programs in early childhood education institutions. In this article problems encountered during implementation and requiring solutions critical issues will be discussed and recommendations will be made to resolve them.  In this context, this study will contribute to preventive programs that are developed by considering problems and challenges in Turkish society and to the research based on comparison.
